A Washington, D.C., woman was charged with animal cruelty after Bedford County sheriff’s deputies conducting a traffic checkpoint heard a knocking sound and found a goat in her trunk.
The goat’s legs were tied and it was panting heavily, said Maj. Ricky Gardner of the Bedford sheriff’s office.
The car’s driver, Fiona Ann Enderby, 32, was released after being charged Friday night. Gardner said Enderby told a deputy that she had bought the goat from a farmer and was going to give it to the four other occupants of her car, Kenya natives who live in Lynchburg.
A temperature reading of the trunk, taken 10 minutes after the lid was opened, registered 94 degrees, Gardner said.
Lt. Darryl Saunders said the goat is being held at the Bedford County animal pound and seemed to be recovering.
“He’s sitting over there now, just chilling and as happy as he can be,” Saunders said this afternoon.
Enderby is scheduled to appear in court in July.
