Red, White, and Blue…soap that is

Yesterday I decided I’d see if I could get enough coconut oil together to make a three-layered soap for the 4th of July.  I had just enough coconut butter left for a small batch, so I went for it!

Well, it took a little longer than I had hoped to do, but I got it done, and unmolded it this morning, and it turned out perfect!  I was going for a little different shaped bar, using the same mold, and they are cut just a little thick, but the layers turned out perfect, and the soap smells wonderful!

I used the last bit of my titanium oxide to make a white center layer and it did indeed turn out white.  Goats milk soap, due to the nature of the  milk and lye reacting, normally turns out a light shade of tan.  Most people who buy my soaps do not want added color, but sometimes, for that special occasion, it’s nice to have something a little different looking.

Now, to figure out a nice 4th of July display.  I got time because it won’t be cured until sometime in June.  I used the maximum amount of milk to make sure I had plenty of time to work with getting these layers right before the soap started setting up.  I usually use a little less milk, and consequently have a shorter cure time, but these will take at least 3-4 weeks to cure.

Well, we’ve got our rain back with a vengeance.  I’ve got horses to do today and have to go milk and it’s pouring down rain!  It’s supposed to continue for several days.

But, we need the rain, that’s for sure.

Happy Monday!
